A CV joint allows for torque transfer from the engine to the wheels while accommodating fluctuations in transmission.

How often do CV joints need to be replaced?

There is no defined time for this replacement to be done. However, under normal driving conditions, CV joints need replacement after approximately 70,000 to 130,000 miles. However, cars driven in rough, off road, or extreme weather conditions could require the replacement sooner than cars driven under normal conditions.

Regular maintenance of the CV boot is crucial for the longevity of the CV joint. Tears on the CV boot can allow debris, moisture, and dust to enter, leading to CV joint failure.

Signs that your CV joint or boot needs replacement

  • Vibrations coming from the driveshaft
  • Leaking grease on the inside edge of tires
  • Clicking or knocking sounds when turning, especially at low speeds
  • Visible tears in the CV boot
  • Vibrations when accelerating the vehicle

The CV joint allows the CV axle to flex and transfer the driving force to the wheels. As such, when the CV joint undergoes damage, the car axle is also affected. When car axles are damaged, you will notice clicking sounds when turning, grease leakage on suspension components and wheels, vibration when driving, and clunking sound upon deceleration or acceleration.

Issues brought on by a damaged CV joint on car axles;

  • Vibrations emanating from the axle shaft
  • Axle replacement if the damage is considerably significant
  • A damaged axle or CV joint can make the car lose control

Damage to the CV joint or axle can result in loss of traction in the least severe cases. However, in worse-case scenarios, it can cause wheels to lock or loosening of the side shaft. Additionally, this damage can result in the deterioration of other neighboring parts, such as the oil sump, suspicion components, and gearbox.
