Many vehicle owners are nervous when it comes to taking their vehicle into an auto shop for routine maintenance, afraid they will get a list of things that need to be fixed. One of the most important maintenance issues is servicing the fuel system to increase the efficiency of the fuel injection process. Your owner’s manual may not list a specific time or mileage interval for this service, however, the fuel system still needs to be cleaned. Especially if you have had your vehicle for a while and have put thousands of gallons of fuel in it. Even if you have used “clean” fuel, it will naturally begin to accumulate deposits in the fuel system, decreasing the efficiency of the fuel injection process.

You may wonder just what does a fuel system service consist of? About every 60,000 to 80,000 miles, you should have your mechanic perform the following services:

  • Chemical cleaning of the fuel system to remove deposits— Deposits settling in the fuel tank, fuel pump and filter, fuel lines, and fuel injectors puts extra stress on the fuel pumps and do not allow the fuel injectors to deliver the right amount of fuel to the engine. Special chemicals will remove these deposits.
  • Replace worn-out components—Fuel filters should be replaced about every 30,000 miles. However, fuel pumps and fuel injectors shouldn’t have to be replaced unless they are showing signs of wear and signs of problems, such as hard starting, low fuel pressure, poor fuel mileage, and/or misfires.

So how will a fuel system service benefit your car?

  • Improves gas mileage, saving money at the pump
  • Reduces the amount of toxic fumes emitted from your vehicle
  • Restores and maintains your vehicle’s performance and power
  • Increases the lifespan of your engine and its components

Tip to Remember: To maintain the function of your fuel injector process, don’t neglect to have a fuel system service as recommended by your mechanic or the manufacturer’s service guidelines.
